Nepalese Politics at the Crossroads

Nepalese politics again seem to be at a crossroads. With Nepali Congress leaders openly announcing the withdrawal of support for the CPN (UML) government and the RPP leaders too indicating their desire to form a coalition government, the position of the six-month-old government looks increasingly shaky. Its leaders are busy running from house to house of top RPP and members of the pro-Kisunji faction within the NC. The ongoing meetings between Surya Bahadur Thapa and Girija Prasad Koirala are responsible for generating such optimism among Congress leaders and former Panchas. On the other hand, a number of RPP MPs prefer a coalition with the UML rather than that with Congress. Their argument is based on their perception that the UML is a nationalist party. A team comprising of ten-five each from RPP and UML – is busy negotiating for a possible understanding. While UML’s deputy general secretary Bamdev Gautam and RPP’s parliamentary leader Lokendra Bahadur Chand are also frequently holding talks. The ratio within the RPP is said to be 10:10 on whether to join the present government or form a coalition with the Nepali Congress.
