Chitwan, Aug 31: Authorities have managed 199 unidentified bodies recovered in Chitwan following the Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa, which were carried downstream through the Trishuli and Narayani rivers. The bodies started decomposing, compelling authorities to inter them.
The bodies were managed at a forest area in Devghat, Bharatpur Metropolitan City 1, by Sunday night.
According to Rameshwar Poudel, chief of the District Police Office, Chitwan, 272 bodies have been recovered so far. Of these, 199 have been managed while 12 have been identified.
Authorities have preserved DNA samples from the bodies before managing them in the forest, Poudel said. Families have collected the bodies that were identified following postmortem examinations.
The authorities have also placed identification markers at the sites where the bodies were managed. This will allow the remains to be recovered and handed over to families if DNA tests later establish a match with samples provided by families of missing people.
Of the 272 bodies recovered so far, 110 were men, 62 were women, seven were boys and six were girls. The remaining 87 were classified as other remains.
As bodies continue to be discovered along the riverbanks, the Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been jointly deployed to search for victims and manage the recovered remains.
