Voices for a change

EDITORIAL

House Speaker Devraj Ghimire remarked that questions have been raised about federalism. He said that federalism was not appropriate and that it did not meet the expectations of the people.

Bamdev Gautam, speaking at the National Assembly meeting, remarked that the national assembly and provincial structures can be scrapped to save unnecessary expenditure by the government.

Similarly, in the Nepali Congress Central Working Committee meeting, many of the central leaders demanded an amendment to the constitution by scrapping the proportional election system. They have argued that such a system would prevent political parties from forming a majority government, resulting in the formation of a coalition government and the permanent continuation of political instability. Some central-level leaders, including Shankar Bhandari, have even demanded scrapping the federal structure and also replacing secularism with a Hindu nation.

Already, RPP is advocating against federalism, secularism and republicanism demanding a Hindu kingdom. Meanwhile, the splinter faction of RPP, RPP Nepal, has organized a demonstration demanding scrapping of the present political system.

Many political parties are in the streets with the demand of scrapping the present political system by replacing it with the 1990 constitution.

Due to the increase in expenditure for operating federal structures, the government is unable to manage the general sector expenditure from its revenue. Therefore, the government is compelled for taking domestic as well as international debts to meet the expenditure. Besides, the government has imposed and exceeded VAT and other taxes in almost all areas by squeezing the taxpayers. At one point, the taxpayers will surely go to the streets against the government. Always, we have been saying that the present political system is not sustainable and affordable for Nepal. If we remove the federal structure and reduce the size of the federal parliament, the nation can save trillions of rupees, which could be invested in infrastructural projects.

Finally, when the present constitution has already been proven non-functional and would further weaken the nation’s sovereignty, independence and financial status, it has already been late for scrapping or amending the present constitution. When we have identified the disease, why delay has been made for the cure of the disease?
