Lalita Niwas and fake Bhutanese refugee scams serve as two fitting examples of how loot initiated and protected by high-profile leaders has been thriving in an organised manner in the country.
The fake Bhutanese refugee case that spoiled Nepal’s image in the international arena culminated by sending two powerful politicians to judicial custody. Former home minister and powerful leader of the Nepali Congress Bal Krishna Khand and former deputy prime minister and UML secretary and others are now in judicial custody in the case. Although what verdict the court will give, the case itself shows how the leaders were involved in loot. Of course, singer Prakash Sharma looks true for singing “Lootna Sake Loot Kanchha…” but the leaders who imposed a ban on the popular song have not given up their old habits.
Immediately after the fake Bhutanese case, the Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police arrested others in the Lalita Niwas land scam case. Nine persons have already been arrested and others may be arrested. The arrested include business tycoon Min Bahadur Gurung, owner of Bhatbhateni Super Market and former Election Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Shah for buying or facilitating 36 ropanis of government land of Lalita Niwas that house residents of the Prime Minister, Speaker, Office of the Nepal Rastra Bank etc.
