RPP expels Uddhav Thapa for backing UML candidate in Bagmati

Kathmandu, Aug 21: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has taken disciplinary action against Uddhav Thapa, the party’s parliamentary leader and provincial assembly member in Bagmati Province.

The party’s Central Executive Committee, which met on Thursday, decided to act against Thapa for defying the central party’s decision and instructions by supporting CPN UML provincial assembly member Kiran Thapa Magar for the post of Bagmati chief minister.

The RPP had sought an explanation from Thapa on Wednesday, but he did not submit one.

RPP Chair Rajendra Lingden said the party had decided to recommend Thapa’s removal both as a general member of the party and as a member of the provincial assembly.

“We have decided to recommend removing Uddhav Thapa from both the party’s general membership and his position as a provincial assembly member,” Lingden said.

According to Lingden, the Central Executive Committee had decided on August 5 that the party would not join provincial governments. The following day, the party summoned all 12 of its Bagmati provincial assembly members to the central office and briefed them about the decision.

Lingden said the party had again sent a letter on August 17 instructing its Bagmati lawmakers not to support or oppose the provincial government.

“But suddenly, a letter was sent yesterday saying that the party would support the UML. This is a violation of party discipline,” he said.

Thapa was elected to the Bagmati Provincial Assembly from Kathmandu Constituency 8 (B) in the November 2022 elections.
