Public holiday on Fagun 1 to commemorate violent acts!

By Our Reporter

The government for the first time gave a public holiday on Monday to commemorate the violent ‘People’s War’ launched by the Maoists 27 years ago, in which 17,000 Nepalis were mercilessly killed in 10 years.

A meeting of the Council of Ministers held at the office of the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers on Sunday decided to give the public holiday despite strong objections from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, UML ministers and the public.

It was the first time the government dared to give a public holiday on Falgun 1, the day when the Maoists had waged violent activities in 2052 BS.

However, the decision drew severe criticism from the public. Even a rally was taken out in Kathmandu against the decision. In Gorkha, a campus lecturer was thrashed for opposing the public holiday of Fagun 1.

The so-called ‘People’s War’ waged by the Maoists from February 13, 1996 (Falgun 1, 2052 B.S.) ended with the inking of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) on November 21, 2006.
