Of late, Bharat Dahal, an independent patriotic analyst, was arrested from eastern Nepal. He was escorted to Kathmandu under police custody. It is alleged that he was arrested on charges of cybercrime.
It has become normal these days for the government, in the process of demonstrating its stunt, to arrest people, including bankers and businessmen, without a strong case to keep them in police custody. “First arrest and investigate later”—this appears to be the priority of the present stunt government. So far, in many cases, people held in police custody have been released on bail by the court.
The government, on the other hand, is trying to curtail press freedom either by stopping government advertisements to privately owned media or by reducing the amount of public awareness advertisements distributed through the Advertisement Board. Media persons are in agitation against the government.
Due to the government’s terror tactics, businessmen are reluctant to invest, resulting in a piling-up of liquidity in commercial banks. If the present situation continues, the economy may collapse soon.
There is no strong evidence for the arrest of Bharat Dahal. Yet, the government appears to be aiming to terrorize people in the process of practicing authoritarian rule. Meanwhile, the government has failed to bring back the alleged main culprit in the cooperative fraud case, GB Rai, to Nepal. Notably, Rai is a partner of RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane.
