25 Years Ago: Government mulls Arun III to reduce costs

The communist government is exploring avenues of cutting down on the costs of the controversial Arun III project and of easing some of the World Bank’s conditionalities in favour of Nepal after it last week wrote to the bank seeking three weeks time  for the purpose. The government has requested the bank to postpone its January 9 meeting scheduled to decide on the project from the donor’s side. Minister of state for Water Resources Hari Prasad Pandey told Review that the government is confident that costs could be slashed if some of project work was performed by the Nepaliese themselves.
