Kathmandu, Sept 20: Rainfall could increase across Nepal from the middle of this week, with some areas at risk of extremely heavy rain, meteorologists say.
A low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal is expected to affect India and could also reach Nepal. Dr Binod Pokharel, an associate professor at Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, said its effects could be felt from Asoj 8 to 12. He warned that heavy rain could affect several parts of the country during that period.
The system is forecast to move through India’s Odisha state. According to the India Meteorological Department, it is likely to reach the west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of southern Odisha and northern Andhra Pradesh, by the morning of September 23.
Its path remains uncertain, however. Some experts in India and Nepal say it is too early to determine exactly which areas it will affect.
Pokharel explained why he thinks Nepal could receive heavy rain. The monsoon has already withdrawn from parts of northwestern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Delhi, allowing dry air to move in from that region. He said the dry air could prevent the Bay of Bengal system from travelling farther west, steering it towards Nepal and bringing intense rainfall.
Environmental expert and meteorologist Ujjwal Upadhyay has also warned that the system could pose a serious risk.
