Most of the eighth session of the parliament has passed. This winter session, the first session after the mid-term and second General Elections, saw only a couple of the bills or so introduced, including those relating to torture and compensation and working journalists. The government received the vote of confidence from all the 198 members of the parliament present. The ruling UML party, on the other hand, lost the contest for the speaker of the House of Representatives. The vote of confidence was given only to avoid the otherwise impending third General Elections.
The opposition parties allowed the government’s policies and programmes as well as the update budget to be passed. The acrimony seen in the past sessions was greatly tempered this time, perhaps because the government has been in the saddle very recently. On the government’s part perhaps because of lack of time, bills relating to other important issues like corruption and commission, which formed major election platforms of the UML, show no signs of being introduced.
