Pokhara, Sept. 4: Two people died, and two others were injured after an Indian-registered car plunged into Phewa Lake in Pokhara early Friday morning.
According to police, the accident occurred at around 4:50 a.m. when the driver lost control while travelling from Sedi toward Lakeside. The car plunged about 20 metres from the road at the Gairichaura turn in Pokhara Metropolitan City-18.
Four people were in the vehicle. Police and Armed Police Force teams were deployed for the rescue operation, recovering two people alive and two others unconscious from the lake.
The survivors, identified as 27-year-old Anmol Kumar Yadav and 33-year-old Suraj Yadav, both from Raxaul, Bihar, India, were taken to Gandaki Medical College. Police said they were in moderate condition and able to speak.
At around 5:55 a.m., rescuers recovered two more people from the water in an unconscious state. They were taken to Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences, where doctors pronounced them dead.
One victim was identified as 26-year-old Navdeep Kumar Yadav of Raxaul, East Champaran, based on his Aadhaar card. The other victim, a man estimated to be 40–45 years old, remains unidentified.
The car, bearing registration number BR 05 DB 6759, was pulled from the lake with a crane at around 6:20 a.m. and taken to the Baidam Ward Police Office. Police said further investigation is underway.
