Banks suspend online services amid web security risks

Kathmandu, Oct 24: Several commercial banks in Nepal have temporarily suspended their websites and online banking services in response to a security vulnerability identified in PHP, a widely used web technology.

The banks have taken measures to protect customers’ financial information, banking systems, and online transactions from potential cyberattacks.

Kumari Bank, Nabil Bank, Siddhartha Bank, Global IME Bank, Nepal Investment Mega Bank, Himalayan Bank, NIC Asia Bank, Machhapuchchhre Bank, Prime Commercial Bank and Citizens Bank have reported disruptions to their online services.

Some banks have issued public notices stating that their websites and electronic services have been temporarily suspended. They said the services would resume after assessing and addressing the security risks.

According to notices issued by the banks, the move is intended to address potential security threats rather than to carry out routine technical maintenance.

With digital banking use growing, banks have become cautious about system vulnerabilities that could compromise customers’ personal information, login credentials and transaction security.
