Nepal starts exporting ghee to the international market

Kathmandu, August 23: Nepal has formally begun exporting ghee to the international market for the first time. In the initial phase, the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) has started exporting DDC ghee to Dubai.

According to the DDC, the ghee has been sent to Dubai on a trial basis with the aim of expanding the international market for Nepali ghee. The product will be made available in the market through local distributors there. If the trial proves successful in Dubai, the DDC plans to expand exports to other West Asian countries and gradually begin exporting its other dairy products as well.

According to the DDC, 1,200 jars of ghee are being sent to Dubai in the first consignment. Each jar contains 350 millilitres, bringing the total quantity exported to around 600 kilograms. The cost value of the consignment is approximately Rs 550,000.

The ghee has been packaged in specially designed glass jars for the Dubai market. The DDC said that although the first shipment was sent by air in response to demand from a large department store that is about to open in Dubai, larger quantities will be exported by container in the future.

The ghee has been exported through Nepalese exporting company Rato Ra Chandra Surya. All the quality tests and procedures required for export to Dubai were completed before the shipment was dispatched.

Currently, DDC ghee is sold in Nepal at Rs 1,300 per litre in tins and Rs 1,250 per litre in pouches. The selling price in Dubai will be determined based on transportation costs and other applicable taxes.

According to Prakash Chandra Ghimire, Managing Director of the company, the first batch of 600 kilograms of ghee is being exported under an agreement between the DDC and Rato Ra Chandra Surya International Company.
