Trump visa curbs on Nepal, 74 nations struck down

Washington, Aug 22: A US court has struck down a tough immigrant visa policy adopted by the Donald Trump administration for Nepal and 74 other countries.

Manhattan-based US District Judge Janet Vargas ruled against the Trump administration’s policy, Reuters reported.

Immigrant rights organisations, including the Catholic Legal Immigration Network and African Communities Together, had filed a lawsuit on behalf of applicants seeking to sponsor family members for immigrant visas. After hearing the case, the court ordered the policy restricting immigrant visas by nationality struck down.

In her ruling, Vargas said the policy was unlawful and violated federal immigration law. She also said the policy improperly curtailed the authority of the State Department.

“The policy restricting the issuance of immigrant visas based on an applicant’s nationality directly violates the statutory framework,” the ruling said.

The Trump administration had tightened restrictions on family-based immigrant visas, arguing that immigrants from various countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia placed a greater burden on federal government resources.
