Kathmandu, April 25: President Ramchandra Paudel has stressed the need to promote public awareness on effective measures to reduce earthquake risks, including preparedness, response, and safety practices.
In a message on the 10th Earthquake Memorial Day, he said Nepal remains highly vulnerable to natural disasters, making it essential for concerned agencies to actively spread awareness about risk reduction and safety measures among the public.
The President also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the devastating April 25, 2015 earthquake, with its epicenter in Barpak, Gorkha, and in the subsequent aftershocks. He noted that while earthquakes are natural disasters that cannot be prevented, their impact can be minimized through proper precautions.
Paudel highlighted that increasing urbanization has further heightened seismic risks. He pointed to Nepal’s geographical conditions, structural vulnerabilities, and human-built infrastructure as key factors contributing to earthquake risk.
He called for continued efforts toward safe construction practices and vigilance. Emphasizing both resilience and cultural identity, he said newly built and reconstructed structures should incorporate earthquake-resistant technology while reflecting Nepal’s traditional character.
He also expressed gratitude to all those who directly and indirectly contributed to reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts following the earthquake.
