More than 8,000 inmates still at large

Kathmandu, Sept 21: At least 8,226 inmates who escaped during the “Gen Z” protests on September 8 and 9 remain on the run, officials said.

According to Department of Prison Management Director Chomendra Nyaupane, a total of 14,555 inmates and detainees had fled from 28 prisons and nine juvenile reform centers across the country after riots, arson, and vandalism broke out. Of them, 6,328 have returned so far, while the rest are still missing.

Nyaupane said 13,591 escaped from prisons and 964 from reform centers. Among those who returned, 5,987 came back to prisons and 341 to reform centers.
