The ongoing process to appoint the Vice Chancellor of Tribhuvan University has been dragged into controversy after controversial figures were also included in the shortlist.
After the TU’s Vice-Chancellor Name Recommendation and Search Committee picked 14 from 43 candidates in its shortlist, the process drew public criticism.
Among the short-listed candidates, Acting Vice-chancellor Shivlal Bhusal was accused of concealing information, former vice-chancellor Kesharjung Baral of Pokhara University was accused of corruption, and former vice-chancellor Tirtha Raj Khania was accused of plagiarism.
When the search committee made the shortlist of the candidates public, many suspected that the open competition was a ploy to appoint professors close to the ruling parties.
After Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal announced to appointment of the vice chancellor of the TU through an open competition, applications were sought and 43 applications were received. Of them, Ekraj Ojha’s application was rejected.
But when a few controversial men were included in the shortlist, the Prime Minister and Education Minister were asked to evaluate the nominees.
While the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the parliament asked to correct the list, the lawmakers sought clarifications for the inclusion of the controversial persons in the committee.
Going by the inclusion of the controversial persons in the shortlist, the VC selection process is likely to be mere drama staged by PM Dahal.
The legislators were adamant that the disputed person should not be shortlisted. The committee also called for an investigation into Bhusal’s recent appointments. On February 6, Bhusal’s executive council met and decided to appoint assistant deans, four department heads, and six campus heads. Protests erupted in the committee over the political appointment and affiliation of the Acting Vice-Chancellor.
