NC observes National Reconciliation Day by scrapping BP’s ideology

Nepali Congress marked the 48th National Reconciliation Day by holding various programmes across the country on Monday.

Nepali Congress has been celebrating National Reconciliation Day every year on January 16 to commemorate the day when the party’s founding leader Bishweshwar Prasad Koirala and other leaders returned home from India by embracing the principle of national unity and reconciliation in 1977 according to which the party will work with the monarchy to save sovereignty while fighting with the same for democracy. This means the principle of reconciliation was for the continuity of the constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

But this year, the forum of the National Reconciliation Day ceremony was used for republicanism by scrapping the original concept of unity between the people and the king.

In Kathmandu, the NC marked the day by organising a special programme at the Nepal Academy, Kamaladi. Interestingly, the event was attended by the top leaders of the three political parties including Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ CPN UML chair KP Oli and CPN (Unified Socialist) chair Madhav Kumar Nepal.

Addressing the event, Prime Minister and Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Maoist) Prachanda said that all the parties and leaders of Nepal are inspired by the late BP Koirala’s ideals in one way or another.

PM Prachanda mentioned that there was no doubt that Koirala, the founder of the Nepali Congress, was the patriotic and popular leader of Nepal’s democratic movement.

He also used the forum to mention government works and to safeguard the republican setup.

President of Nepali Congress and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba said that democracy is the key to progress and urged everyone not to think about alternatives. “The necessity and justification of reconciliation in Nepal is increasing, so everyone should move ahead together,” he said.

Deuba said, “The policy propounded by BP Koirala helps promote harmony and unity. Now the need for it in our country has increased even more. People who are looking for various excuses are trying to create an environment against democracy and the republic. The alternative to democracy is a better democracy, and there is no alternative to it,” Deuba said ignoring the spirit of National Reconciliation Day.

Deuba said that harmony and unity among the political parties in Nepal are good things amid fierce competition against each other.

Similarly, the Chairman of the main opposition party CPN (UML) and former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said that he had no desire to play within the Nepali Congress.

Oli reiterated that his party wants to move forward by reconciling with political parties on the issues of nationalism, good governance, prosperity, and development of the country.
