Distribution of 2 lakhs rupees compensation to former PLAs opposed by all sides

By Our Reporter

The decision of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal to give Rs. 200,000 to each disqualified former Maoist Combatants has drawn flak from all sides. The decision was made public when the country has been reeling under a financial crisis. Although PM Dahal had only tried to implement the old decision taken by the Oli-led government, the decision backfired. When the NC leaders like Gagan Kumar Thapa and Shekahr Koirala strongly opposed the plan, there was once a fear of whether the government could survive. However, the situation has somehow been averted,

But the decision is continuing to draw criticism from the public as well as other parties.

Moreover, when the revelation of the decision and the sit-in launched by Mahabir Pun happened simultaneously, this further drew more criticism to the money distribution. Only the Maoists defended the decision, others opposed it.

Fed up with the criticism of the scheme, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal had to say that the government would provide the money in instalments.

Prime Minister Dahal Monday said that the cash relief to be disbursed to the disqualified former Maoist combatants would be distributed in instalments.

The issue of disbursing cash relief to ex-combatants had invited unnecessary criticism, the Prime Minister said in Chitwan on Monday. He further said the decision was not even taken by the current government.

He clarified that the decision was taken in 2071 BS by the joint government of the Nepali Congress and UML.

He said, “There is no point in objecting to the issue which was discussed and concluded by the joint government of CPN-UML and the Nepali Congress and when UML’s Bishnu Poudel was Finance Minister.”

“Since the country is in financial crisis, the issue of distributing money to ex-Maoist combatants in instalments is under discussion,” he added.
