Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal’s visit to India has now become uncertain. Although he was said to be invited for an official visit to India immediately after his appointment as Prime Minister for the third time on January 25, even three months after his appointment, his visit date has not been fixed.
Many political Pundits in Nepal have started interpreting the delay in deciding the date for PM Dahal’s India visit as India’s low priority to PM Dahal.
Earlier, the Indian media reported that PM Dahal was visiting India from April 28. But that could not happen.
Again, the political situation in Nepal is now volatile. When the PM received the invitation, he was leading the coalition government of the CPN-UML and the RPP. But now, he is leading the government of a new coalition of the NC and the Terai-based three parties. He had already taken a vote of confidence twice, he may be taking it again if the Rastriya Swantantra Party withdraws its support.
As such, the government is not strong in itself, and it can collapse at any time. Moreover, a dispute within the ruling NC has deepened after the by-election of April 23 in which NC candidates suffered losses in Tanahun and Chitwan. Moreover, the election of Dr. Swarnim Wagle, who had deserted the NC citing that party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife Arzu Rana denied him any opportunity in the party, from the Rastriya Swatantra Party has put Deuba under pressure as both the leaders and cadres blamed the Deuba couple for the defeat in Tanahun. As such, Deuba is still unable to send the names of four ministers and the government has not received its full shape.
Fearing the possible fall of the government, the PM has already requested the RSP to join the government.
India which has been closely observing the political developments in Nepal may be in a ‘wait and see’ mood and has not fixed the date. Maybe, if the RSP does not withdraw its support to the government and join the government, a suitable environment will be created for India to fix the date for the PM’s India visit.
