The nominations of the candidates for the by-election to the House of Representatives members in all three constituencies concluded peacefully on Monday. The by-election is being held in three constituencies of three districts on April 23.
Altogether 69 candidates filed their nominations in Chitwan Constituency-1, Tanahun Constituency-1 and Bara Constituency-2, with Bara having the largest number of candidates at 36.
Of them, 33 were from the political parties and 36 were independent candidates. In Tanahun Constituency-1, nine candidates and in Chitwan 24 candidates filed their nominations. Bara Constituency-2, 36 candidates filed their candidacies. Rabi Lamichhane, former Home Minister and chairman of Rastriya Swotantra Party, is contesting from Chitwan and Janata Samajwadi Patry-Nepal chair Upendra Yadav is contesting in Bara.
Likewise, Dr Swarni Wagle is contesting the poll in Tanahun after deserting NC with Govinda Bhattarai of the NC.
The Chitwan constituency has fallen vacant after the SC scrapped the post of lawmaker of Rabi Lamichchhane for not meeting requirements while filing nomination in the November poll while Ram Chandra Paudel elected from Tanahun-1 has been elected President and Ram Sahay Yadav elected from Bara-2 has become Vice President.
Jit Narayan Shrestha of the Nepali Congress (NC), Ram Prasad Neupane of CPN-UML and Jiblal Puri of Rastriya Prajatantra Party have filed their candidacies in Chitwan.
However, it is Dr Wagle, the former vice chair of the National Planning Commission, who has stolen the limelight this time. He deserted the NC, joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party and became a candidate for his new party in Tanahun. NC leaders have been spending energy criticizing him because the people know well his mettle and the injustice meted out against him by NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba and his spouse Arzu Rana.
He may defeat the NC candidate and reach the parliament. His entry into the RSP has further increased the popularity of RSP among the masses.
Similarly, Upendra Yadav is challenged by Janamat Party’s Shiva Chandra Kushahawa, RSP’s Ramesh Kharel and UML’s Purusottam Paudel in Bara-2.
