The world’s first-ever Communist government in the post-Cold War era, installed in office after a revolution by ballot, not bullet, has unveiled a human, not authoritarian, face.
Indeed, despite all the dark misgivings of the prophets of gloom and doom in and outside Nepal, UML chairman Man Mohan Adhikari’s opening statement after being appointed as prime Minister by King Birindra in the evening of November 29, as per Article 42 (2) of the Constitution, makes that much clear.
Among the notable comments made while talking with the press after his historic appointment was his stress on consolidation and institutionalizing democracy. No less signification was the new cooperativeness and cordiality displayed by the king in fulfilling his constitutional role.
That should go a long way in underlining the UML’s commitment to the values and norms enshrined in the constitution, including those relating to the institution of a constitutional monarchy.
