Kathmandu, 20 March: The government has acquitted Ravi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, on charges of passport misuse. The District Government Attorney’s Office (DGAO), Kathmandu has decided not to prosecute Lamichhane, who obtained a Nepali passport while his American citizenship and passport were valid.
The Supreme Court dismissed Lamichhane’s position as a member of parliament as he became a candidate using his Nepali citizenship, which was not automatically maintained after taking American citizenship. The DGAO, Kathmandu has concluded that ‘although it appears that he took a Nepali passport without giving up his US citizenship and passport, it was not misused by Lamichhane and should not be tried.
