Mayor Balen intensifies demolition drive in Kathmandu

By Our Reporter

Mayor Balendra Kumar Shah of Kathmandu Metropolitan City is now in action. He has been busy demolishing illegally built structures and evacuating basements of the buildings and the areas allotted for parking.

He has not spared any buildings, offices and even the court that have rented the basement built for parking or erected structures on public land.

When the landlords tend to quarrel and show their political strength, Balen promptly produces documents proving that the landlords have built or used places illegally. What Balen is now doing looks similar to the actor of a Bollywood movie Nayak.

Balen, who launched his demolition drive a week ago from New Baeshwor, has demolished illegal structures in many places like New Road, Makhan, Buddha Nagar, Koteshwor, Tripureshwor and Bhotahity.

He has given an ultimatum to many to remove the illegal structures.

Elected as an independent candidate, the Mayor has been under attack from a few leaders of the CPN-UML and Nepali Congress for his demolition drive. However, people in general and even the supporters of the two parties have hailed his works to empty the basements of the big buildings and pull down the illegal structures. As an independent candidate, Mayor Balen has no fear of losing votes for his work neither does he has any leader whose instruction he should follow. As such, he has been working aggressively.

UML leader Mahesh Basnet criticized Balen after he pulled down the structures of Alpha Beta in New Baneshwor because its owner was close to UML chair KP Oli. Bishwakarma spoke against Balen probably after the demolition of structures erected by NC supporters. But Balen has not heeded them.

Moreover, his works in Kathmandu have inspired the mayors of another metropolis, sub-metropolis and municipalities to launch similar drives. Nepalgunj Sub Metropolitan City has already launched a similar drive while Pokhara Metropolis and Bhaktapur Municipality have initiated the process for the same.
