The plan of the top leaders of the five ruling parties to forge alliance in the local level elections is likely to be foiled after the lower committees of the Nepali Congress outright rejected to forge such alliance in many local levels.
Because of the opposition from the local leaders and committees of the NC, the top leaders delayed to divide the seats of the six metropolitan cities and 11 sub-metropolitan cities despite holding marathon talks lasting for three days.
Although the parties agreed to divide the mayoral posts of six metropolis and 11 sub-metropolitan cities on Wednesday, there is a fear that NC leaders may file candidacy against the candidates of the ruling parties because in districts, the NC leaders and cadres have strongly opposed the central leaders’ plan to forge alliance. Moreover, popular NC leaders like Shekhar Koirala, general secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Shrama have opposed any alliance in the elections, putting the alliance at risk. Thapa has boycotted the meeting held to divide the seats of the metropolis and sub-metropolitan cities. Of the six metropolis, NC is given three and of the 11 sub-metropolis, NC has taken seven.
When the ruling Maoist Centre, CPN (Unified Socialist) and JSP-N sought more seats than their strength deserves, the local NC leaders have become angry and started lobbying against alliance. When the weaker parties sought more seats, the leaders have been unable to finalise the seat division even when only a few days are left to field candidacy.
