26 Years Ago: Control or guidance?

One important question that is being asked today concerns the exact relationship between the ruling NC/ RPP/NSP coalition and their respective parties.  Even more specifically, what is being probed by many is what forms the relationship between the NC party and Prime Minister Share Bahadur Deuba is or will in time develop into. There are several reasons why such a question is exercising the politically conscious mind today.

The first, of course, concerns the manner in which the NC led coalition was formed and the fact that Deuba was elected  NC parliamentary leader last December on the support he received from former prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala who himself is widely perceived as wishing to have another stint as a prime minister among other political goals.

The next is related to the fact that Koirala, while prime minister, had reduced the role of the party vis-a-vis the government into virtually nothing.

For that, he was not only criticized by many within his party, but it was also one of the main factors behind the dispute between Koirala and party president Krishna Prasad Bhattarai and between Koirala and (once again) party supremo Ganesh Man Sing.
