The Nepalese Army is in the final stage of issuing tender notice for the construction of 71 bridges along the Kathmandu-Tarai Express Way. The construction of bridges will start in around three months, for which the army will be issuing tender within a week, said sources.
Out of the total 87 bridges required for the 72.5 kilometers fast track, 16 bridges will be built by international companies. Those special bridges will be constructed after four months.
The Nepalese Army informed that the local construction companies will be asked to build the 71 bridges in the first phase.
The army has decided to scrap the agreements made so far for the construction of the bridges and start fresh bids for the construction.
The army said that the 16 special bridges will be handed over to international companies due to the complexity and technical challenges in those areas. The tender for the 16 bridges will be issued by mid-February and the work will be started two months later, according to Brigadier General Bigyan DevPandey, spokesperson for the Nepalese Army.
He said the construction of the three tunnels along the express way will begin only in the next fiscal year. The tender for the tunnels will be issued after mid-March.
The Nepalese Army, which bagged the contract to complete the fast track, is yet to acquire 799 ropanis of land for the project.
According to Pandey, out of the total 15,468 ropani land, they have already acquired 14669 ropani by paying due compensation. The process to acquire the remaining 799 ropani land has been initiated, said Pandey.
The government had handed the project to the army in mid-2017 with a mandate to complete the fast track within four years. However, it took around two years for the government to approve the detailed project report. The government had approved the DPR only three months ago.
