The District Attorney’s Office in Rautahat has filed a case against suspended lawmaker Mohammad Aftab Alam for his alleged involvement in a mass murder case that took place in Rautahat district in April, 2008.
The Attorney’s Office sought life imprisonment against Alam. The Office has filed the charges under the criminal code with maximum 25 years in jail sentence.
The District Police Office, Rautahat had filed the case on Friday (November 1) after keeping Alam in custody for 23 days. He was arrested on October 13.
Alam, who is also a Nepali Congress lawmaker, was accused of killing dozens of people throwing them alive into furnace of a brick kiln.
He was accused of taking the lives of people who were injured in a bomb explosion that occurred at a cowshed of Alam’s relative when the victims were making bombs.
Alam and his other accomplished were field three separate charge sheets under the Explosive Act-1961’s Section 4 Sub-section 10 (A) with a claim of two years in jail and Rs. 20,000 as fine or both and attempt to murder of the present criminal code Section 183 (2) with a claim up to 10 years in jail and Rs. 100,000 as fine and murder charge sheet under the criminal code provision as mentioned in the section 177 of Sub-section 1 with a claim of 25 years in jail term.
Alam was presented to the Court on Tuesday for giving his statement. But his statement did not conclude.
Alam along with 10 other his accomplish were accused for taking lives of 23 people of which 14 had died in the blast and eight injured were burnt alive in the furnace of a brick kiln.
The charge sheets were also filed against Alam’s brother Mohammad Mahatab Alam, Sekh Bhadai, Mohammad Mobin Alam, Sekh Sheraj, Badri Sahani, Sekh Fajalehak, Sagir Alam, Sekh Jumain alias Sekh Malakar, Gauri Shanker Sah and Mukti Sah, of Bara district. Except, arrested Alam, all others are still at large.
As per the police investigation, Alam had killed eight of the injured witnesses in a brick kiln including Oshi Akhtar and Trilok Pratap Singh.
A team of police led by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nabin Karki arrested Alam from Idris Gate in Rajapur Municipality-1, while he was on his way to attend a tea reception organised by Nepali Congress in the district headquarters, Gaur.
The Supreme Court had ordered for a thorough investigation into the case and action as per the law on May 29, 2012.
Alam was elected to the House of the Representatives from Rautahat Constituency-2 in 2017 polls.
