Former Speaker of the House of Representatives Krishna Bahadur Mahara is now in the judicial custody over a rape allegation to one of the staff members of the Federal Parliament Secretariat.
Regarded as one of the ‘gentlemen’ while in the then Maoist group and even in the unified Nepal Communist Party, Mahara’s downfall came as a big shock to those who knew him closely.
Following the news about his illicit acts with a junior level staff, Mahara submitted his resignation to Deputy Speaker Dr. Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe.
But his bad luck did not end here. Police arrested him in the middle of Dashain, and he is still doing his days in custody.
Although Mahara denied the allegations in the initial phase, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is not happy with his performance as the Speaker, and another party chair, Pushpa Kamal Dahal exerted pressure on him to step down.
It was reported that Mahara and the woman were in good terms for decade. Therefore, it looked unlikely that what he did was a rape. But the first statement of the woman was enough for the unexpected fall of Mahara. The woman changed her statement and even denied reporting the police. But later when her husband sought divorce, shed filed a case in the police.
The dramatic development and frequent changes in the statement of woman, who was said tobe suffering from depression has also bred conspiracy theory—Mahara was trapped to foil Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Nepal visit and to finish Pushpa Kamal Dahal politically. However, President Xi paid the visit of Nepal, and the people have to wait a few years more to judge the second conspiracy theory.
