Kathmandu, 3 October: Chairman of the National Consumer Forum Prem Lal Maharjan has objected to the action taken against Salt Trading Corporation, a state-owned entity that has been selling sugar to consumers at subsidized prices amid rising market prices.
Speaking at a meeting of the National Assembly’s Development, Economic Affairs and Good Governance Committee on Friday, Maharjan questioned the basis and procedure of the action against the corporation while presenting suggestions on ensuring the smooth supply of essential consumer goods and strengthening market monitoring.
“If the intention is merely to frighten others by taking action against one party, that may be understandable. But if the action has been taken under someone’s influence, it would be detrimental to consumers,” he said.
He said it was inappropriate to take action against a state-owned institution providing sugar to consumers at subsidized prices without fully examining the evidence and due process.
“The government must remain vigilant to control black-marketing, smuggling and price hikes during the festive season. But if an institution selling goods to consumers at affordable prices is penalized without sufficient evidence, it will ultimately affect consumer interests,” he said.
