Syangja, Sept 28: The 144 MW Kali Gandaki ‘A’ Hydropower Project at Beltari in Syangja is set to resume electricity generation on Monday after the water level in the Kali Gandaki River began to recede.
The project, located at Beltari in Kali Gandaki Rural Municipality 5, had suspended power generation after four days of continuous rainfall caused the river flow to rise sharply.
Atmesh Poudel, chief of the Kali Gandaki ‘A’ Hydropower Centre, said generation had been halted as a precaution against possible risks from the swollen river.
With the river level now falling, workers are removing silt accumulated inside the tunnel and inspecting the powerhouse before restarting generation, he said.
Poudel said a technical team had already inspected the project following the flooding and found that electricity generation could resume.
As the Kali Gandaki River swelled, the project had opened all gates of its dam at Mirmi to release water downstream.
Continuous rainfall also inundated Setibeni Bazaar, located at the junction of Syangja, Parbat and Gulmi districts. Residents of 26 houses in the market area have been relocated to a nearby school.
Meanwhile, a motorable bridge connecting Syangja and Gulmi, located a short distance downstream from the project’s dam, was swept away by flooding in the Kali Gandaki River on Sunday morning.
