Kathmandu, Nov 3: Police have arrested 640 people during a weeklong special sweep operation across the Kathmandu Valley to curb criminal activity and strengthen law and order. Those arrested include 82 convicted offenders who had been absconding after being found guilty by various courts.
According to the Kathmandu District Police Range, the arrests were made during a special security campaign conducted at various locations in Kathmandu from October 26 to November 2 (Kartik 9 to 16).
Of those arrested, 559 are men, 78 are women, and 3 are in other categories.
Police said the arrested individuals include 82 people who had been convicted in various cases and were on the run, as well as 20 defendants who had absconded while facing ongoing cases. Legal proceedings against them have been initiated.
As part of the special campaign, police stepped up surveillance and checks in public places, public transport, areas surrounding government offices, bus parks, busy markets and other crowded locations, the Kathmandu District Police Range said.
Kathmandu District Police Range spokesperson Dan Bahadur Thapa said special police teams had been deployed to maintain peace, security and public order, as well as to prevent and control potential criminal activities.
According to Thapa, surveillance has been intensified in bus parks, public transport, busy markets and areas around government offices that attract large numbers of service seekers. These locations are considered vulnerable to theft, robbery, harassment and activities by middlemen, he said.
The Kathmandu District Police Range said further investigations were under way into the allegations against those arrested and their alleged involvement in criminal activities.
Police said the special surveillance and checking campaign would continue as part of efforts to control crime and provide a safe environment for the public.
