The country experienced an extremely difficult period on the eve of Bada Dasain, Nepal’s greatest festival. The devastating Bhotekoshi flash floods caused significant loss of life and extensive damage to private and public property. The tragedy was compounded by flooding in the Budhi Gandaki River, which damaged settlements in several villages and destroyed or damaged bridges. Fortunately, timely warnings helped reduce the loss of human lives.
The impact of climate change has become increasingly evident in Nepal. Major highways connecting Kathmandu with other parts of the country suffered severe damage, disrupting transportation, supply chains and the movement of essential goods to the capital. Nepal, despite contributing very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, is increasingly bearing the consequences of climate change.
The international community, particularly developed countries with historically high emissions, must take greater responsibility for addressing this global challenge. Nepal needs stronger international support for climate adaptation, disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure. At home, the government must prioritise the rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced families, provide relief to affected communities, and rebuild damaged roads, bridges and other essential infrastructure.
Despite these hardships, the spirit of resilience and solidarity that defines the Nepali people must prevail. As we celebrate Bada Dasain, we extend our heartfelt greetings and best wishes to all Nepalis at home and abroad. We stand in solidarity with those who have lost their loved ones, homes and livelihoods in the disasters. May they find the courage and strength to overcome their irreparable losses, and may the nation recover from the devastating damage inflicted by these calamities.
Let us celebrate this great festival with simplicity, compassion and a spirit of unity, remembering those who are suffering and extending a helping hand to those in need. May Goddess Durga bless us all with peace, strength and prosperity, and guide our nation towards recovery, resilience and a safer future.
