Kathmandu, September 20: Apples worth more than Rs. 20 million have been exported from southern Humla. So far, apples worth Rs. 21.6 million have been exported, according to Chudamani Pant, chief of the Agriculture Development Office.
At present, traders in Humla are purchasing apples directly from farmers at Rs. 60 per kilogram. Apples from the southern municipalities of Tajakot, Adanchuli, Chankheli and Sarkegad have been exported to various districts. Gopal Budha of Tajakot Rural Municipality-5 said that a single farmer who has planted an apple orchard in these municipalities has earned up to Rs. 1 million. In previous years, apples produced each year would rot or have to be fed to livestock because there were no roads connecting the area to markets outside the district. However, exports to other districts began last year.
Apples in the higher-altitude areas of Kharpunath, Simkot and Namkha rural municipalities have not yet ripened because of the higher elevation. Preparations to harvest apples in these municipalities are being made only after Asoj 15.
