Kathmandu, Aug 31: Professor Dr. Govinda KC has started a three-day satyagraha protesting the government’s decision to increase seats in private medical colleges.
Speaking at a press conference held in the premises of Geta Medical College in Dhangadhi, Dr. KC announced the start of his protest. At the event, he said, “When seats in private medical colleges are increased, leaders and mafias fill their pockets, but the quality of education declines. A decline in quality means a decline in health services, which is playing with the health of ordinary Nepalis.”
He accused the government and the Medical Education Commission of making decisions that harm students and the public instead of strengthening the education and health system.
According to him, Nepal still needs to expand government medical colleges and hospitals, but the government has instead been promoting policies that benefit private colleges.
Giving an example, he said,“At a time when the Institute of Medicine under Tribhuvan University hesitates to take in even 100 students, it is unfortunate to grant 130 seats to private colleges that lack proper infrastructure and patient flow.”
Along with the satyagraha, Dr. KC has put forward several demands. These include revoking the decision to increase seats in private medical colleges, establishing government medical colleges and hospitals in Ilam, Udaypur, and Dadeldhura, and immediately operating the completed teaching hospital and academic programs at Geta in Kailali.
He also demanded implementation of past agreements, including the Integrated Institute Act, the Higher Education Act, provisions on non-profit medical education, and the creation of required posts.
