Kathmandu, Aug 3: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has made controversial remarks regarding the inclusive system, calling it a temporary arrangement and downplaying its significance.
Speaking at a program held in the capital, Oli said people tend to speak in a misguided way about inclusiveness. “Sometimes we get carried away while talking. This concept of inclusiveness, etc., is something we arranged temporarily,” he stated.
Oli went on to claim that the inclusive system is only relevant for attaining political positions. “Does inclusiveness produce doctors? Engineers? This inclusive system is only for attaining political positions, not for any real work,” he asserted.
He argued that merely mentioning inclusiveness in the constitution does not ensure its implementation. To support his point, he referenced a dialogue session with Costa Rica.
“I’ve observed Costa Rica,” Oli said. “In our delegation, there were two or three women during the talks. On their side, there were eight women and only two men. That wasn’t because they wrote inclusiveness into their constitution. Does inclusiveness ensure eight women? It doesn’t. At most, it might have ensured five.”
His comments have sparked criticism for undermining the principles of inclusion enshrined in Nepal’s constitution.
