Overshadowed Sagarmatha Sambad

Kathmandu, May 17: The first international conclave on climate change and global warming, Sagarmatha Sambad, kicked off in Kathmandu on May 16.

Above 175 delegates from different countries and international environmental organizations have participated in the Conclave inaugurated by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli. However, Nepal failed to bring high-level leaders from neighboring countries, India and China. Efforts were made to invite Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Chinese Premier or Foreign Minister to attend the Dialogue.

A delegation led by Xiao Jie, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People’s Congress, participated in the Dialogue.

From India, the Union Forest Minister participated. From Japan, the Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs attended the Dialogue.

Nepal had made efforts to bring the UN Secretary-General and also leading personalities from different countries.

On the eve of the Sambad, India-Pakistan dispute and cross-firing took place suspending the Pakistani sky for commercial flights, from which, aircraft arriving in Nepal from the West had to make a round in the Arabian Sea skipping the Pakistani sky. If the war between India and Pakistan was escalated, the Sagarmatha Sambad could face further chaos, nevertheless, just before the conclave, a ceasefire between India and Pakistan took place ensuring peace in the region.

Amid such adverse circumstances, the international conclave took place in Kathmandu.

Nevertheless, Nepal’s diplomatic lapses were seen in organizing such an international conclave.
