After the National Democratic Alliance led by him decided to appoint him as the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi took oath for the third time on Sunday by organising a lavish ceremony at the Rastrapri Bhawan on Sunday.
Modi’s swearing-in ceremony looked like a coronation of a king. He invited Presidents, Vice President and Prime Ministers of neoghbouring five countries and Mauritius and Seychelles.
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe and President of the Maldives Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, Vice-President of Seychelles Ahmed Afif, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay attended the swearing-in ceremony.
When he took oath along with 72 ministers of his new cabinet, Sunday evening, the scene reminded of the coronation ceremonies of the past kings.
Modi has become the first three-term Prime Minister since Congress stalwart Jawaharlal Nehru. However, Modi does not enjoy the majority of the single party this time.
Security was tightened for the swearing-in ceremony. A three-layered security was put in place at Rastrapati Bhawan for the swearing-in ceremony. President Droupadi Murmu administered an oath to Modi.
Police had declared the national capital a no-fly zone, banning the use of aerial platforms like drones, paragliders, remotely piloted aircraft and hot air balloons for a few days.
Although the leaders were said to be invited as part of India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, in reality Modi-led government has not been friendly to the neighbouring countries for a decade because of his increasing interference in the domestic affairs of the countries and growing enmity with Pakistan. Modi did not invite Pakistani leaders to his swearing-in ceremony. Moreover, Modi led to the collapse of the South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in an attempt to isolate Pakistan from South Asian countries.
