Japanese FM’s one-day sojourn

By Our Reporter

Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko arrived in Nepal on a one-day official visit on Sunday.

During her stay in Kathmandu, the Japanese Foreign Minister paid courtesy calls on President Ramchandra Paudel and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and held bilateral talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

In the bilateral talks held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two leaders reviewed the progress made in bilateral relations and cooperation so far and discussed the entire gamut of bilateral relations to elevate economic and development cooperation as well as cultural and people-to-people relations in the days to come.

According to a press statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday night, the two leaders held discussions on enhancing support and cooperation in Nepal’s major developmental priorities that include agriculture, hydro-power, infrastructure development, connectivity, export promotion, industrial production, foreign investment and tourism sectors among others.

“The matters discussed during the meeting included the role of Japan’s experience, knowledge, skill, and technology in multiple sectors including industrial development, agriculture, hydroelectricity, and infrastructure development in Nepal; including Japan’s assistance in Nepal’s flagship programme to launch tunnel technology in developing road infrastructures,” read the statement.

As the Year 2026 will mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Nepal-Japan diplomatic relations, the two leaders underscored the need to commemorate the milestone with high-level exchanges and various events, read the statement.

Both sides also discussed matters relating to enhancing cooperation between two countries at bilateral, regional as well as multilateral levels in the areas of mutual interest.

Likewise, during the courtesy calls on the President and the Prime Minister, the visiting Japanese Foreign Minister discussed the matters relating to further strengthening the bilateral relations, development cooperation, and mutual interest.

In the cordial meeting held at Sheetal Niwas, President Paudel highlighted Nepal’s deep-seated concerns regarding the preservation of its invaluable mountains and water resources, emphasising the urgent need for global action to combat climate change, according to the President’s press advisor Kiran Pokharel.

In response, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa reiterated Japan’s shared concerns about climate change and stressed the necessity of collaborative efforts to safeguard mountains globally, including those in Nepal.

Likewise, during a meeting with Prime Minister Prachanda held at Singha Durbar, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa also affirmed Japan’s unwavering commitment to supporting Nepal’s development endeavours.

The Japanese Foreign Minister arrived in Nepal on an official visit at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha.

However, the government committed a blunder while receiving the Japanese Minister.

Japan has been the biggest development partner of Nepal for decades and Nepal and Japan enjoy good relations. But Foreign Minister Shrestha, forgetting this, did not reach the airport to receive her. Instead, she was received by Foreign Secretary Sewa Lamsal at the VIP Lounge of Tribhuvan International Airport.

Concluding her one-day visit, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa departed from Kathmandu the same night.
