Election for the 19 seats of the National Assembly, the Upper House of the Federal Parliament is scheduled for January 25 next year. The political parties, especially those included in the ruling partners, are exercising to capture all 19 seats, not letting any new UML leader enter the Upper House.
However, they are unable to settle seats seats-sharing deal as small parties are claiming more seats.
A total of 20 seats in the National Assembly will be vacant after March 3. Of them, 19 will be elected through elections. The remaining one will be nominated by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers.
Among the departing MPs are four from the Nepali Congress and eight from the CPN-UML, including NA Chair Ganesh Prasad Timilsina. Likewise, the terms of three MPs from the CPN (Maoist Center), two from CPN (Unified Socialist), one from Janata Samajwadi Party, one from Rastriya Janamorcha, one independent and one president-nominated are expiring.
Provincial Assembly Members and chiefs and deputy chiefs of local levels are the voters in the NA election. However, no representative from the Rastriya Swatantra Party will be elected to the NA as the party has no representation in provincial assemblies and local levels.
If the ruling coalition keeps the unity intact, the CPN-UML is likely to lose all eight seats this time.
