NC/UML face-off moves to Assembly

The current face-off between the UML government and the Nepali Congress party over the dissolution of the House of Representatives has moved to a new venue: the National Assembly, considered by some as a “permanent” body unlike the House of Representatives, which has a maximum life of five years.

Although last year the National Assembly was prorogued two days after the House of Representatives was dissolved under Article 53 (2) of the Constitution, the Nepali Congress is attempting to prolong its life and embarrass the UML government, say political observers here.

To validate that, they point to the stark political divergence in their respective stands as indeed reflected on June 25 when the National Assembly met for its ninth session.
