At 1 PM on Tuesday, Radio Nepal ended a tense, nail-biting period of suspense of nearly four full days when it informed the nation of His Majesty King Birendra’s dissolution of the House of Representatives and the setting of November 23 as the date for fresh elections, acceding to the recommendation last Friday by Prime Minister Man Mohan Adhikari, in accordance with the provisions of Article 53 (4) of the Constitution. In addition, the Radio Nepal announcement, quoting the principal press secretariat of the King, disclosed that the November polls could be conducted by the incumbent government, which the King hoped would do so in an impartial, free manner in a peaceful atmosphere.
