Legalising serious crime?

By Our Reporter

After the controversial bill that has provisions to release the culprits of even the heinous crimes if their acts were linked to politics by withdrawing their cases was passed by the House of Representatives, people across the country have suspected the motifs of the government led by the CPN (Maoist Centre) in the backing of the Nepali Congress.

The Maoists itself is in power because of the killing spree it waged from 1996 to 2005 when over 17,000 Nepalis were killed while the Nepali Congress want to withdraw cases filed against its leader Mohammad Aftab Alam who was accused of killing many keeping them in the brick kiln furnaces.

With the passing of the Bill, the government can withdraw any case giving it a political colour. For example, if people die in a bomb explosion set by any political group, the government can withdraw cases filed against the members of the group terming the act as a political one.

Of course, the Bill will criminalise politics because powerful politicians can misuse the law to free their relatives and cadres. Considering the implication of the controversial Bill, Nepali Congress senior leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala during the party’s central working committee meeting demanded the withdrawal of the Bill.

It could be a serious lapse in maintaining law and order. Human rights organisations have already condemned the efforts made to pass the Bill.
