The 10-day-old UML minority government has promised to open a new era in the problem-ridden world of Nepalese journalism. Such was the basic thrust of Information and Communications Minister Pradeep Nepal’s address at a gathering of journalists on December 5 where the media personalities elected to the new House of Representatives were honoured.
In doing so, however, the young UML minister and a former journalist took care to underline that he could not, at such an early stage, set a precise timetable or agenda for action in that regard.
He made it plain, nevertheless, that in framing policies and actions designed to resolve long–standing problems affecting the media and that of working journalists in particular the government would engage in consulate Fourth Estate.
