The health of Tribhuvan University, the oldest university in the country, is not good. Political interference and division of its key posts among the major political parties have badly ruined the university over the years. When the ruling parties appoint their men as Vice Chancellor, and in other posts, the students and teachers affiliated with other parties tend to protest against them, often padlocking the offices of the VC, Rectors and even Campus Chiefs over a trivial issue, affecting both administrative and academic activities.
Because of the recurring problems of padlocking and protest, the academic calendar of the oldest university has been a mess. It takes about a year or even more to publish the results of the annual examinations, which only spoils the future of the students. Because of this, many students tend to fly overseas for higher studies. It is evident from the sharp fall in the number of students on many of the TU campuses. It is reported that even technical institutes like Forestry, Agriculture and Engineering have stopped getting students as per the quota allotted to them. In the past, these institutes used to conduct entrance examinations in various shifts because of the large number of students willing to enroll on the course.
Now the same university is holding the elections of the student unions on March 19, which will further spoil not only the teaching-learning environment but also turn the campuses into a parade ground for the political parties.
Of course, TU has turned into a mere factory to produce incompetent leaders. University is meant for academic activities and the job of the students is to study. But in TU and its campuses, genuine students cannot get an environment to quench their thirst for knowledge, as political activities put academic activities under the shadow. Students need to go to campuses carrying, books, note copies and pens. But in some TU campuses, the students are found carrying knives and sticks to fight each other. And the situation will not be over unless the bad practices of allowing political parties to form their separate student organisations and holding union elections come to an end.
