NC awaiting Maoist’s decision about new presidential candidate

Kathmandu, 16 February: The Nepali Congress (NC)has  decide to wait for sometime with regard to nomination of  the candidate for the post of President to forge agreement with the Maoists. As Maoist Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is maintaining the stance that the President should be elected by national consensus, the NC is hoping that the highest post of the country will be in its hands. The NC leaders, who had started wooing Dahal by giving a vote of confidence to the government, seem to be getting more confident of getting the presidency.

Maoists have a decisive vote for the presidential election. Despite talking about national consensus, it has not been clear whether  the Maoists will leave the current alliance with the CPN-UML. NC leaders  suspect that Maoist will take a middle path by not supporting the candidates of both UML and NC. As an alternative, the president may be made from a party other than Congress and UML or picked from among non-partisan persons . NC leaders say that the option of leaving the alliance with the UML and joining the old alliance with the Maoists is strong as there is a strong opinion within the party that such an option should be taken.

An NC leader is of the view said that his party was waiting for the decision of the Prime Minister Dahal  for the selection of the candidate because the Maoist have not made a clear opinion. It depends on Dahal whether the gets the president or not. Leaders Ram Chandra Poudel and Krishna Prasad Sitaula are probable candidates of the NC. NC Chief Sher Bahadur Deuba has been saying that  he will nominate Poudel to the coveted post.
