Kathmandu, 26 January: Literary figure Greta Rana, the spouse of the late Madhukar S Rana, economist, passed away recently.
Our Consultant Editor Emeritus Mana Ranjan Josse writes: Greatly saddened to learn of the recent passing of Greta Rana, MBE, who was born in England in 1943 and made Nepal her home for about half a century.
She was predeceased by her husband Madhukar Shumshere Rana whom she met while a student.
With six novels and six poetry collections to her credit, she was a towering literary figure in Nepal and was engaged in a plethora of worthwhile activities.
Among her acclaimed work was the rendering into English of a Nepali historical novel Seto Bagh, White Tiger, by Diamond Shumshere Rana under the title, Wake of the White Tiger.
Apart from being a friend, Greta was for many years a columnist with The Rising Nepal with which I was associated at the time.
She also worked at the publishing unit of ICIMOD, when my daughter Ojaswi was also employed there.
On this sad occasion, I wish on our behalf, as well as that of my wife Sabita, to express heartfelt condolences to her three sons and their families on their tragic loss.
We pray to the Almighty to give them the strength to
bear their great sorrow. We also beseech Him to grant the deceased’s soul perpetual rest.
