Kathmandu, 22 January: The presidential post is ceremonial, although, the president also can use power when the executive government commits a constitutional mistake. In the past, then-president Rambaran Yadav and also the outgoing president Bidya Devi Bhandari have used constitutional power against the government’s decision. Therefore, the president’s post has also become important for political leaders.
For the political party in the government, a comfortable president is important to implement its decisions. Therefore, Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal is talking about a “comfortable“ president. He has said that the president should be elected through a national contentious.
UML chair K.P. Sharma Oli has said that there will be a consensus president from UML, however, he has not disclosed the name of the presidential candidate.
UML leaders Ishwor Pokhrel, Astalaxmi Shakya, Subhas Nembang, Yubraj Gyawali, and Goma Devkota are learnt to have lobbied for the presidential post.
From the Nepali Congress, Ramchandra Poudel and Krishna Shitaula are in the race.
Madhav Nepal, chair, Unified Socialist Party, is also eager to get the president’s post. Accordingly, Baburam Bhattarai and Mahantha Thakur are also eying the presidential position.
Meanwhile, the Indian power center is trying to break the present coalition. If the Maoist Center will vote for the NC candidate for the post of president, the present coalition will fall into crisis. Under Indian instruction, NC president Sher Bahadur Deuba and Prime Minister Pushpakamal Dahal have developed an understanding to vote for the NC candidate for the post of president.
From such an act, UML has become suspicious. UML leaders are saying that after an agreement between Oli and Dahal, UML developed an alliance and supported Dahal to form the present coalition government. The agreement held between Dahal and Oli was for Dahal to become prime minister for two and a half years and hand over the PM’s post to Oli and Dahal (Maoist Center) to support the UML candidate to the post of president. Following the same agreement, the UML candidate has become the speaker.
