Kathmandu, 22 January: Editors’ Society of Nepal (ESON) organized Govinda Biyogi Memorial Day amidst a function organized on Saturday, 21 January, at Surya Chour, Nuwakot.
Different speakers shed light on the contribution of the late Biyogi on the occasion.
Former prime minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai, who was the chief guest at the function, recalled Biyogi saying that he was a historical person and a dynamic journalist who always supported the left movement in the country.
UML leader Amrit Bohara recalled that the late Biyogi had supported him during his difficult times. When Bohara had gone underground on the issue of the Piskar incident, Biyogi had helped him, which he could not forget.
Bahadur Singh Lama, parliamentary party leader of the Nepali Congress Bagmati Provincial Assembly, said that it is the glory of Nuwakot for the establishment of the Govinda Biyogi Memorial Research Center at Suryachour. He also assured of providing support from the provincial government.
Chairman of the Shivapuri Rural Municipality, Govinda Thapaliya, said that the establishment of the Editors’ Society building for media research has helped to boost tourism at Suryachour.
Patron Kiran Vaidya and general secretary Shyam Dotel shed light on the activities of the Society in the media field.
ESON chairman Puru Risal extended thanks to those who had made a financial contribution to ESON for constructing the building.
The programme was organized coinciding with the death anniversary of the late Biyogi, founding chair of ESON.
On the occasion, Navaraj Chalise was awarded Govinda Biyogy Journalism Award-2023. The Award consists of a purse worth Rs 25001 along with a letter of appreciation; journalist Madhav Poudel was awarded the Govinda Biyogi Special Journalism Award 2023. The Award consists of a purse worth 15001 and a letter of appreciation.
Similarly, three senior journalists including Khildhoj Thapa, Bund Rana and Bimala Tumkhewa were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the field of journalism.
Chief guest Dr Bhattarai handed over awards to the recipients.
