Kathmandu, 1 December: Power struggle in Nepali Congress has begun. General Secretary duo of the party Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma have mounted pressure on party President Sher Bahadur Deuba for premiership saying that he should now step down and take the role of guardian. Sharma has already said that he will propose Thapa as the leader of the parliamentary party and then as the Prime Minister.
Deuba too has not taken Thapa’s challenge normally as most of the losers in the first-past-the post electoral category sre from his own side and the upcoming election of the parliamentary party leader will be held secretly. Deuba, who is hoping to garner support from alliance partners for the formation of the government, has faced serious obstacle within his own party.
Nepali Congress leaders say that not only Ramchandra Poudel, Prakashman Singh, Krishna Prasad Sitaula, Shashank Koirala, who directly and indirectly supported Deuba during party’s 14th National Congress, are also aspiring for the executive post of the Prime Minister. Deuba is trying hard to win over them. On the contrary, Shekhar Koirala, who was the main competitor for the party president has remained silent. Thapa, who won as the General Secretary from his own team, is moving aggressively to compete with Deuba as the leader of the parliamentary party. It would be very tough for Deuba this time to be elected as the leader of the parliamentary party as most of the leaders of his close aides have lost the election.
